When searching for a photographer who could capture the beautiful and quirky moments of a neighbourhood like no one else, we looked no further than the talented Tom Ryaboi. Since launching his professional career in 2006, Ryaboi's photographs have been featured on countless blogs and sites, including blogTO, where he does a monthly feature on Toronto street scenes. During the two and a half day shoot for B.streets, Ryaboi (and his team of photographers and production assistants) shot 7000 frames, documenting life at Bloor and Bathurst. "The neighbourhood is such a great mix of people," he said, "I love the attitude. It's very friendly, very warm, very honest." This was a dream job for the photographer, who loves the spontaneity and possibilities of street shoots because, "you never know what you're going to get."
A brief chat with Ryaboi.
What inspired you to become a photographer?
After finishing a business degree, I travelled through South America and South East Asia and started taking pictures. I found I really loved it and it just went from there.
What's your favourite spot in the B.streets neighbourhood?
New Generation Sushi on the South side. And the Green Beanery right at the corner of Bathurst and Bloor.

TORONTO MURALISTS / MURALISTS
A mural respresents "a sincere commitment to those surroundings. It conveys a message that the place is important to you." This philosophy, from the Toronto Muralists blog, was just one of the reasons that head artists Ryan Dineen and Alex Lazich, and their team at Toronto Muralists, were chosen to bring the exterior of the B.streets sales centre to life with two enormous murals. Spanning over 40 feet on the north side, and double that on the west, the B.streets murals interpret Tom Ryaboi's photography in a new medium. The Toronto Muralists were particularly thrilled to work on this project, as many of them honed their craft while attending the arts program at Central Tech, just one block south of the B.streets site. Using their varied backgrounds, from graphic design to hip hop art, these talented artists poured their heart into this project and showed their commitment to their community.
A brief chat with the artists.
How many cans of spraypaint did you go through to make these murals?
Over 200.
What's the largest mural you've ever done?
This one is the largest and has the most detail.

DANNY APPLEBY / VIDEOGRAPHER, THINK TANK CREATIVE
For almost ten years, Danny Appleby and the team at Think Tank Creative have been producing incredible video projects for big names like John Mayer, Gorillaz and Alyssa Reid. With their talent for forging emotional connections through the screen, we knew they'd be the perfect team to produce the B.streets short films. Inspired by the neighbourhood, the interesting characters and the beautiful days of summer, these talented videographers tried to capture the spirit of the area in 120 short seconds. After 4 days and 1 night of shooting, 8 hours of footage and 25 hours of editing, they've put together a moving representation of life at Bloor and Bathurst, showing how incredibly vibrant and colourful the neighbourhood really is.
A brief chat with Appleby.
Are you a Bloor and Bathurst local?
My wife and I just bought a house in the neighbourhood. Seeing what's happening in the area has me so excited to be a part of this.
What hidden gem did you discover while shooting?
Ghazi Juice. I had one of their drinks and it turned me into Superman for a week. I swear I could lift a car.
If you weren't a videographer, you would be…
A journalist or a writer.

Reposado Bar house band, The Reposadists, provide the smooth and unique soundtrack on the B.streets short films. For the past four years, the five-member band has been entertaining crowds every Friday night at vocalist Sandy Alexander's family-owned bar. In addition to their weekly gigs and day jobs (the band counts two full time musicians, an accomplished painter, a bar manager and a medieval language specialist among the group), The Reposadists managed to put out their first album, and have a second on the way.
A brief chat with the band.
What are some of your favourite spots at Bloor and Bathurst?
Sushi on Bloor, Tacos El Asador and Lee's Palace.
How did you pick the songs to record on your debut album?
We took a vote.
